A unique monument
The Canonica is a Romanesque cathedral classified as a historical monument since 1886, it overlooks the archaeological site of Mariana, rich in ancient and early Christian remains.
Impressive in its solitude, moving in its simplicity, the Cathedral SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA, like a challenge to time, stands above the Roman remains of its imposing structure. It was erected at the beginning of the 12th century to replace the early Christian basilica ruined by successive invasions. Pisa, then power, dominant in Corsica, launched itself in this way, in a sort of prestigious enterprise not unrelated to the victory in the 11th century of the crusaders over the Saracens.
The architectural approach adopted by the talented builders is based on a search for a balance between the desired pure lines, in order to obtain an overall harmony, combining sobriety, the volume of the masses and their careful use of Cipolin stone veined with lively colours. Come to cross more than 2500 years of history, from the City of CAIUS-MARIUS through the paleochristian site dominated by this remarkable Cathedral, to reach after several centuries the twinning between Lucciana and Monaco.
